Greetings from Istanbul

tea rant

post Turkish bath chill zone

The tea here is strong. Cool dogs lazily roam the streets. The outdoor fish market has hungry cats for friends. Turkish people are proud of their country. The whole economy seems to run on tea. Tea shops deliver little glasses of tea to shop owners down the block served in real glass! People have conversations with one another. There’s a real sense of community and a strong family bond. If you make an effort to speak a few words in Turkish, it goes a long way. You can go from buying a robe in a shop to being invited back into the house for a cup of tea with the whole family standing around you staring at you and smiling. I gave one shop owner a copy of my CD Dreamhouse and she immediately put it on and smiled a smile so big I had one those moments where time stood still. The world is a funny, strange and beautiful place. I’m a happy traveler.

P.S. I made best song ever on Chart Attack!

Thank You! (and lots of things to remember)

I had so much fun at The Belly Up birthday bash show. But Jesus Christo, that was a lot of work. I want to thank everyone for traveling so far to be with friends. What a great group of friends we have. I was so tired Saturday that I just hung out with my AARP card. I’m very lucky to have such a rich group of friends and musicians. Sigh.

Cool New T-shirts

So I was cruising around antique bookstores in Katoomba, Australia and I found this really expensive old book on penguins from the early 1900’s.
I said to myself “Dang Steve. That would make a really cool t-shirt. You should put it on a green American Apparel Tee and reference your new album ‘Dreamhouse.'”
But then I said to myself “You idiot. What does a penguin have to do with a dreamhouse?”
Then I told that voice to shut up.
Then I took a pic of the book and had my friend in Halifax sketch it on a t-shirt. So here it is. It’s available on this website or at the Belly Up show tomorrow.
Here’s a preview of the show
See ya,

Update! Dreamhouse is ready to order! by mail or digital download

front cover
My new CD is done cookin’. It’s ready for order right here on this very website. I went to Halifax, Nova Scotia and met award winning producer/ songwriter Joel Plaskett and formed a strong bond. We decided to make a record at his studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Recorded analog on 16 track 2 inch tape it has the “Dreamhouse” sound. It’ll also be available on vinyl (yes! a record!) in a few more weeks. But the cd is freaking ready now! Order away. It’s also ready to digitally download right now exclusively here. It’ll be up on Itunes and other places in the next couple of weeks. If you’re in San Diego it’s at Lou’s Records and M-Theory records.
The artwork was done by a Halifax artist named Rebecca Kraatz. Check out her website. She did a work for hire for me. Crazy cool woodburn art.
I’ll let you know.
My hand hurts,
I got it re-set in a new stronger pink cast
the resetting part hurt bad in a good way/bad way
but I’m excited

Good to be home

Drawing by Laura Barnard
It’s always good to come home but I sure do love Australia. I’m gearing up to leave for Canada and trying to get ready for my Belly Up Tavern show on Feb 19. John Castro is flying in to San Diego for The Rugburns extravaganza debacle and I’m finishing all the last details for my new CD Dreamhouse which will be available for the first time on that Friday night.
Life just seems to keep pumping along and along the way I meet cool musicians like this Canadian guy named Dan Mangan. He played at a couple of the same places I played in Australia. Very cool gent and a good entertainer as well. I also saw Folk Uke! Man, are they ever funny! If you get a chance, don’t miss their show. They’re sweet and bawdy and touching and crude all in one package.
The drawing at the top of this entry is by a really cool artist from England named Laura Barnard. Check out her site and hire her for work.
I’m also in the midst of finishing up a second cd that I was working on in Perth. It’s being mixed as I type this. Totally different vibe from Dreamhouse. I hope you like them both. I don’t have a title yet for the Perth record or a release date but it will be this year. I also just got word that Malcolm is flying out from Perth for my Belly Up show. He recorded and is mixing my Perth record. You’re going to love him.
