Steve-Poltz-051.jpgphoto by Steve Parr Taylor Guitars South By Southwest was a bust. Hurt my back bending over with a guitar in hand mid show to pull a stage forward. (idiot!) I thought I was going to vomit during my set. I have not felt that sort of pain since my lungs collapsed. Took a bunch of Advil and drove to Oklahoma City for a show. I love playing the Blue Door. Greg is such a wonderful proprietor and all around music lover. He could give a seminar on how not to make money owning a club but always be doing what you love and booking music that you believe in. Caught a flight to Denver and drove the 4 hours to Aspen just in time for soundcheck at The Belly Up. (yes there is another one in Aspen) My old friend Ralph who used to do sound at The Belly Up in Solana Beach California now works and lives in Aspen year round. It was great catching up with him but I think I fell asleep in mid conversation after the show. The owner of the club invited me to stay at his house the next night and what a house it was. Michael Goldberg knows how to live! He took me out to dinner at his sushi restaurant and had his awesome girlfriend Kathy work on my back with her superpowers. Then I had a show in Evergreen and the coolest thing about that gig was all the old pics up on the wall of 80's and 90's band that had played there. It was like a museum and my favorite part was seeing an old pic on the wall of The Beat Farmers with an autograph of Country Dick Montana saying. "I've got a boner for this place!" I played Aurora the next night and got to see my friend Howard who is always a gentleman and a great host. He owns Hubbas Pub and although the turnout was small I must have played 3 hours straight. The pain in my back returned even worse but I took more Ibuprofin and tried to sleep. Caught a flight to NYC where i am now, filming this internet talk show for AT&T blue room called The Hugh Thompson Show. It is sort of a David Letterman style talk show and I get to be the band leader guy. It's really fun making up songs for all of the guests and other songs for weird bits like a segment called Geeks Anonymous. The show is all about technology and is geared toward tech heads. I learn new words everyday like Gnu and Gnash and other things I know nothing about. You'll be able to watch these shows in May or June right on your own little computers. I'll let you know when they're up. I'll be flying back to the west coast in a few days to to San Diego in time to play a show at Cheers of Ramona on March 31st. They have great burgers and Shawn is always there to greet you with a smile and a beverage. Then I get the cherry on top of the sundae. I fly to San Francisco for opening day of the baseball season. The Padres are playing the Giants in SF and I am playing a private party after the game somewhere in the city for this saint named Jeremy who is getting me tickets and organizing the show. I will get to sing a few tunes with my old pal Tim Flannery. Maybe he'll bring Barry Bonds to the show. Either way it should be a hoot. Then I fly back home and go to sleep for a few days and hopefully all this back pain will be history and I'll walt back in to yoga ready to never do a stupid thing like bend over while holding a guitar and pull out a very heavy stage mid show or anytime. See ya somewhere, Steve
