Jake Peavy showed up at my gig last night in Phoenix at The Rhythm Room so I called him up on stage to sing a couple songs. Not only can he pitch great for The Chicago White Sox but he sang two amazing songs he wrote. What a night! Here’s a pic of Jake playing my guitar Smokey Joe.

Can someone name some of the baseball players and scouts that were at the Rhythm Room? I think my baseball friends are jealous.

Hey Tom– Steve Poltz here. Thanks for writing. The Padres trainer and Doctor were there. Hutch and Dr Takahashi. Also Padres right fielder Mark Kotsay. Also a scout for The Red Sox Gary Hughes. He travels all over The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and The USA. Barry Zito was supposed to be there but he had to cancel at the last minute. He had just played a show with me the week before for a group of wounded vets along with Jake Peavy for Strikeouts For Troops.

One of the many highlights of the great Phoenix show was your performance of “Scotch and Soda” with the older guys in the corner singing every word right along with you.

I looked this up in Wikipedia and the song was released in 1958 by the Kingston Trio, but was actually discovered here in Phoenix in 1932. It’s a case of the original songwriter never being found.

Also see the pic of another Phoenix icon on your web page, Lee Hazelwood!
